Temperature Monitoring Programme

Only about half the London Underground network is actually below ground, but a good deal of that is in deep level tube driven through the famous London blue clay that facilitated this kind of construction, mainly during the Edwardian period.

Over the years the energy used to deliver the train service has warmed up the tunnels and surrounding clay, and London Underground has been working hard to mitigate further rises in temperature to maintain levels of comfort within reasonable limits and to ensure the train environment remains acceptable for passengers.

This work depends on accurate data about existing temperatures and how they vary according to outside weather conditions as well as the impact of the various mitigation measures and other variables. Fifth Dimension has been retained to install and monitor the temperatures at all deep level and some shallower stations.

The work involves installation of proprietary temperature logging devices at just under 400 locations and periodic downloading of data to hand-held devices; data comprises temperature and humidity readings taken every 15 minutes. Data is checked for completeness and any other inconsistencies before being forwarded to LU in an agreed format. Great care is required in the data handling in order to meet LU quality requirements.
