Renewed contract specification
Upon rail privatization, Railtrack went to the market with a set of performance contracts and many of the former British Railways standards and specifications were abandoned. After the Hatfield derailment and Railtrack administration, Network Rail began to take back control of its supply chain and detailed specifications for a range of works were again needed. In this case, FDAL was brought in to support the development of tender specifications for station works. The level of detail required and the breadth of assets covered was the antithesis of the work previously done for London Underground, but again FDAL skills were brought to bear to create an entirely new station electrical and mechanical services contract specification. So that historic best practice was embodied, FDAL undertook a research exercise to trawl through British Rail standards, bring relevant content up to date, and incorporate this into the new documents.
The result was a standardized set of documentation which is now in regular use for specifying renewal works. A modular approach was used, so that only the specifications relevant to particular works need to be used in each contract.
